There are several options for decking steel mezzanines or platforms, depending on use of the structure. Those options include:
- Metal roof decks
- ResinDek® (see ResinDek® page)
- Floor plates, commonly referred to as diamond plate or checkered plate
- Specialty wood panels
- Concrete
- Bar grating
Decking
Steele Solutions uses a minimum
20-gauge steel Type B (wide rib) roof decking. Through experience, our
engineers know that, while a load chart may show lighter gauge (22 gauge for
example) might support 125 PSF, our customers have come to expect the solid
feel that 20
gauge minimum provides. Steele Solutions also limits the joist spacing which
is critical to the stong, solid feel that our mezzanines provide.
We apply a bright white paint to our roof deck to enhance light reflectivity
and reduce the amount of lighting needed to illuminate the new work space
created under the mezzanine.
Floor Plate
Diamond plate or checked plate steel floor plates offer an outstanding combination of
durability and safety. As a steel product, these plates can withstand constant travel and use by forklifts or other machinery. The diamond or checkered pattern makes these floor plates slip-resistant so they are safe for foot travel. Steele Solutions offers a 12 gauge floor plate in conjunction with steel roof deck or will provide ¼” floor plate directly over framing for heavy use applications.
The No. 1 limitation to steel floor plate can be the cost compared to
other mezzanine decking options.
ResinDek
Steele Solutions partners with the leader in mezzanine floor decking – ResinDek® – to further ensure durability and reliable of our decked steel structures. In many applications ResinDek may be the most economical decking solution. Due to its added durability and quality fit and feel, Steele Solutions recommends Resindek over standard T&G plywood.
Bar Grating
Bar grating is a commonly used decking for mezzanines, platforms, catwalks and conveyor systems. Welded steel bar grating offers strength and reliability, with the added advantage of allowing light and air to pass through. Two common misconceptions about bar grating are that is the least expensive option for mezzanine decking and that using bar grating eliminates the need for sprinklers below. In most cases, roof deck and wood will be more economical, and in most mezzanine applications sprinklers are required by insurance carriers and building
departments.
